Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your relative. Proverbs 7:4, TLV

Get to Know Your Big Sis.   Wisdom wants to be our sister? How amazing is that? I’m the eldest of five. I have the unique role of being both the eldest sibling and sister. Over the years, I’ve noticed there are certain mannerisms my brothers and sisters share. I suppose these can be environmental or part of our DNA. I look a lot like my father, and so does one of my brothers. Three of us look related, the other two look related to each other. We all have a similar smile, but different-looking teeth.

Most importantly, we share history and experiences. Personal stories. Funny stories. Tragic tales. Ideally, we should share the family’s and individual’s triumphs, as well as the defeats. Share the joys and the sorrows.

This year will be the sixth anniversary of my sister, Alicia’s death. I can tell you there are a lot of things I took for granted that I miss now. Terribly. The camaraderie of shared interests and hopes. I miss her love, friendship, and insights. Her indomitable courage and humor. I changed her diapers and took her with me to my friends’ homes. As adults we spoke weekly. Now, all of that is over — until we reunite in heaven.

The Elder Sister Role

Because I understand the elder sister role, I may have a bit of insight into how wisdom might “feel” about us. More than anything, I want my siblings to succeed in life. To know they are cherished by the Creator of the Universe — our Father — in ways beyond our imagination.

As the first to go through life, I have experiences and counsel that could help them avoid some mistakes in life, but most times they don’t see me in that role. They think I’m bossy and a know-it-all sometimes—and I probably am. Still, that can hurt. But they are my family. And I love them and pray the best for them.

A Sister Relationship

Having a sister relationship with wisdom is one of my greatest treasures. If I don’t “talk” with her every day, I feel like I’m missing something important. Insights I might need for that day or week or lifetime. Wisdom that helps me navigate the challenges and decisions before me.

Wisdom and I have history. She has seen me through the trials and the victories with her insights. And whether I have failed or succeeded, our Father was there to either pick up the pieces or give me affirmation. And I believe He loves that His wisdom and I get along so well.

As my elder sister, I need her counsel, because she shows me how to look more and more like our big brother, Yeshua (Jesus).

Wisdom is our heritage and our legacy. I wonder, does that mean others recognize the “family” resemblance?

May we have a great relationship with our Sister, Wisdom, my friends.
