Do not wear yourself out to get rich. Be wise enough to restrain yourself. Proverbs 23:4, TLV

Wee-Hours Worry.   I remember the scary months before my husband retired and we moved from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Those wee-hours of worry about how we were going to manage our finances with him retiring so early because of his health. We became weary with it, even though our Heavenly Father was clear we were to do it.

It was this verse, and the one that followed that set our feet back on the path to reality — the reality that our Father was in control.

Being wise and prudent with our finances is the right thing to do. And while we were by no means perfect at that over the years, we did make some wise decisions.

A friend said something that really helped to seal our journey back to sanity: We don’t own money. It’s a resource from God. That made sense. And confirmed how important it is to be good stewards of those resources.

Verse five goes on to say:

“When you cast your eyes on riches, it is gone; for it surely sprouts wings and flies off into the sky like an eagle.” (vs. 5, TLV)

When our focus is on the money — whether in greed or fear — we take our eyes off GOD. If money truly is a resource from Him, then it’s His to control.

It’s been seven years since that time, I can say that this truth is as relevant today as it was then. And the life we live today—even with its ups and downs—is better than anything we could have imagined or planned. Only GOD.
