So, if I, your Master and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash each other’s feet. John 13:14, TLV
Humility is Freedom? For too many years I thought that humility was synonymous with weakness. Actually, it is quite the opposite. It takes a lot of strength to be humble, by choice.
Humility is freedom from pride. Let that sink in.
If we truly want to emulate our Heavenly Father’s Son, Jesus it begins with humility. How ironic. We are adopted by the Creator of the Universe, who went out of His way to redeem us by sending His only Son, and He wants us to be humble about it? Yes.
Think of the alternative. A bunch of bratty kids who think only of themselves with a strong sense of entitlement.
Oh. Right. Not a great reflection on our Heavenly Father, or the sacrifice of His Son.
Royalty vs. Humility
Lately, as the world grows darker, we’re seeing a lot of disfunction among our brothers and sisters. Perhaps we are more focused on being royalty than being grateful and in turn, humble.
Another form of pride is selfishness. Selfishness protects our own interests rather than serving others.
This has nothing to do with healthy, wise boundaries, however, we can walk a fine line that is easily crossed into selfishness.
Finding freedom from pride and selfishness is a lifelong pursuit for some, it will probably be for me. But fortunately, I am learning more each day how to be grateful, and that gratitude is teaching me how to live out humility. How about you?
Good morning,
I appreciate your study of the Word. I’m looking for a good commentary and was wondering if you have one in particular that is helpful.
I so appreciate your authenticity and clear, concise and condensed sharing on your blog.
Thank you,
Yours in Yeshua HaMaschiach
Good morning, Dana! Thanks for your kind and encouraging words.
Commentaries. Hmm. Well, I’ll sometimes use David Stern’s Jewish New Testament Commentary. Then, of course, since I was part of the TLV team, I’ll use their Messianic Jewish Family Bible that has a commentary at the beginning of each book of the Bible. For specific verses I’ll google the verse with the word commentary and can get a variety of different options.
But in all cases, I read in context and search to be sure there are other scriptures that confirm my writing. Really, since I’m mostly an experiential writer, I share how the scriptures have impacted my life and faith journey.
Hope this helps.
Shalom in Yeshua,
Terri

It’s kind of cool, isn’t it? Thanks for stopping by, Patricia, and your kind encouragement.
