Are you a fan of mystery, suspense, and thrillers? You know, the kind that keep you up late at night and–for me–with the lights on?

This month’s Author 2 Author is one of my favorite romantic suspense writers, Dani Pettrey. And no doubt I’m not alone.

As a Publishers Weekly and #1 Amazon bestselling author, Dani Pettrey has sold nearly one million copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance.

Her novels stand out for their “wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters” (Publishers Weekly), “gripping storyline[s],” (RT Book Reviews), and “sizzling undercurrent of romance” (USA Today).

She recently was awarded ACFW’s Mentor of the Year. She researches murder and mayhem from her home in Florida, where she lives with her husband.

Dani began a new romantic suspense series, JEOPARDY FALLS with book one, One Wrong Move.  She just released the second book in the series, Two Seconds Too Late! And like book one, it is a page-turner, with twists and turns and a surprise ending. Plan on planting yourself on a comfy seat because you’re going to keep reading!

In the stark but beautiful wilds of northern New Mexico, a luxury spa and couple’s retreat turn into a chilling nightmare when a woman vanishes without a trace, just hours after a public fight with her boyfriend. Worried something sinister has happened, her friends reach out to investigator Riley MacLeod, an expert skip tracer, for help. The assignment means going undercover at the retreat, which means pairing up with private investigator Greyson Chadwick. Their partnership ignites a tumultuous mix of attraction and distrust as Riley’s unorthodox methods clash with Greyson’s meticulous approach.

As they delve deeper into the case and a ruthless hitman is unleashed upon them, Riley and Greyson find themselves fighting not only for justice but for their very survival. Staying one step ahead of danger, the pair discovers a hidden truth that rocks them to the core. In their race against the clock, they can only hope that they’re not too late.

Guess what? Dani reads a portion of the first chapter during our Author 2 Author interview on YouTube.

Two Seconds Too Late is the second book in the JEOPARDY FALLS series. Can you share a little bit about this story with us and also how it builds on the first book, One Wrong Move?

Two Seconds Too Late features skip tracer and expert tracker, Riley MacLeod, of MacLeod Investigation and Security PI firm. When a friend goes missing from a highbrow couples’ retreat, she is paired with fellow PI Greyson Chadwick. With each harboring deep feelings for the other, playing a couple at a retreat starts out as fun, but as they get deeper into the case and their feelings for one another, they find everything is at stake including their lives.

What continuing elements connect each book in the series?

The MacLeod siblings and Greyson Chadwick are all featured in each installment of the series, developing the family bound between siblings. Though their horrific childhood and teen years continue to haunt them as they struggle to break free from its clutches, despite the fact they all turned over new lives. It’s learning to reconcile the past as the past and lay their wounds at the Lord’s feet. The themes of hope, forgiveness and restoration are woven throughout the series.

What did you read as a child? Or, what did/do you read to your children/grandchildren?

I loved mysteries so I devoured Agatha Christie books as a kid. I was so happy to see my daughters and grandchildren become avid readers too.

Do you have any strange writing habits/quirks?

Yep. I like to have my hair up in a messy bun when I write and a strong cup of coffee on my coffee cup warmer plate beside me on my desk. I also like to light candles. That signals writing time for me.

As an experienced author of suspense novels, how do you keep coming up with fresh, pulse-pounding twists for your readers?

I truly believe God lays the stories on my heart, but, even still, I often have to play around with the idea to make sure it’s fresh and not something I’ve done before or done in the same way. Looking outside the box and flipping ideas on their heads can be really helpful.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on the third book in my Jeopardy Falls series. It features P.I. Deckard MacLeod and forensic botanist Harper Grace. It’s tentatively titled Three Steps Behind.
