Is your soul starving? 5 Ways to Get Out of the Laziness Funk!

TODAY’S PROVERB: Laziness brings on deep sleep, and an idle soul will starve. Proverbs 19:15

What is laziness? It’s a disengagement from life in order to pursue rest.

Pernicious laziness — chronic laziness that erodes our life — is like a drug that keeps one doped up physically, emotionally, and spiritually. In its attempts to eliminate stress and work, laziness creates chaos and keeps one in a perpetual state of exhaustion.

Chaos arises when family and obligations are ignored.

Laziness feeds exhaustion and exhaustion feeds laziness.

Not only can our lack of consistent work starve us physically, it can starve our soul. What starves the soul is to miss out on the life our Heavenly Father called us to. A destiny unfulfilled is heartbreaking. The starvation of our souls by our own hand is a sin.

“For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it—just as Messiah also does His community, because we are members of His body.” Ephesians 5:29

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We were created for a purpose. Our Creator set in motion everything it takes to help us walk out that purpose. But, we have the right to not choose that path.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

How can we overcome the occasional laziness — not associated with necessary rest or poor health — and the chronic laziness?

  • Begin by understanding laziness is a choice. We can choose to change our mindset from “how do I avoid” to “how do I do my best.”
  • In our choice we may be sinning by disobeying something GOD wants us to do. Repent. Accept His forgiveness.
  • Find a prayer and accountability partner.
  • Set goals. Begin small and build.
  • And, yes, read a chapter of Proverbs each day along with a Bible study aimed at finding GOD’s destiny for you.

We’ve all struggled with periods of laziness. But, if we’re stuck in a funk of laziness and have lost our way, know that it is possible to renew our mind to be all our Father created us to be. And that’s a good thing.

May we seek to overcome the starvation of our souls, my friends.
