Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 2:13

NEWS FLASH: We’re not perfect.

TODAY’S PROVERB: . . . who leave the straight paths to walk in ways of darkness . . . Proverbs 2:13, TLV

Is it possible to leave the straight paths and walk in darkness? Well, unfortunately, it is. Unless I’m mistaken, we’re not perfect. It’s a shocker, but our Heavenly Father has provided a lot of insights into our inabilities to walk the faith journey consistently.

. . . let us also get rid of every weight and entangling sin. Let us run with endurance the race set before us . . .

HEBREWS 12:1B, TREE OF LIFE VERSION–TLV

There’s a powerful chapter in Hebrews–chapter 12–that takes an honest look into discipline and the importance of persevering, especially after we fall into sin.

One of my many fears — weights and entangling sins — is the fear of being wrong. Of making a mistake. While I’ll give you that some of this stems from pride and the need to be right, a lot of these fears stemmed from insecurities. These insecurities were about not being good enough to be loved for our holy GOD.

Believe it or not, this portion of proverbs is a comfort to me because of Hebrews 12. It lets me know that there is a distinct difference between the straight path and the path of darkness. If I stray, He will “discipline” me right back to where I should be.

The Holy Spirit will nudge me out of darkness. I just need to pay attention.

It’s not about perfection, my friends, it’s about GOD’s direction. Trying to achieve perfection will paralyze us. Following GOD’s path keeps us moving toward Him.

I believe we have a window of opportunity to return before becoming accustomed to the wrong path. Just as our eyes adjust to a dark room, we can adjust — and justify — being in the darkness of sin. And that’s scary.

We can avoid this by staying in His word, staying in community with other believers who will keep us accountable, and in fellowship with our Heavenly Father. Gratitude goes a long way, too.

So, staying on the straight path is part of our Wisdom’s Journey. And, knowing He will help and direct us on that journey is a comfort.

May we persistently follow our Father on the straight paths, my friends.
