Today’s Blog: Wisdom is Like a Puzzle

TODAY’S PROVERB: By mercy and truth is iniquity atoned; and by the fear of ADONAI one avoids evil. Proverbs 16:6, TLV

For some odd reason, today’s proverb reminds me of a puzzle. Perhaps because for a significant part of my life, I had trouble assembling puzzles. And not coincidentally, I struggled with making wise decisions. Putting together a puzzle helps to develop our abilities to reason, analyze, sequence, deduce, logical thought processes, and problem solving skills.  Hmm. Maybe it’s not so odd after all.

In our proverb today, the pieces of a wise life can be assembled if we have an understanding of how to begin. Expert puzzlers suggest beginning with the corner pieces. We could say, the one corner is the “fear of ADONAI” [the fear of the LORD] (Proverbs 1:7). The next corner, “truth.” Another corner, “mercy.” And the last one, “avoiding evil.”

The edge pieces are connected to the corners, so I think of all those verses in Proverbs that anchor and confirm those corners.

Finally, the middle pieces could represent our story — how Yeshua’s redemptive atonement changed our life. That He authors our story. And, if we are open to Him, will help us finish it. (Hebrews 12:2)

No matter how difficult the puzzle is in our life, the Author and Finisher will help us solve it. Because, He can.

So, a life of wisdom is anchored in faith, justification, sanctification, truth, mercy. My puzzle will look different than yours, but we’re united in our foundation. We share the most important experience a person can have — redemption.
