Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 19:8

Today’s Blog: Are You Wisdom’s Host?

TODAY’S PROVERB: One who gets wisdom loves his own soul. One who treasures understanding prospers. Proverbs 19:8, TLV

Okay my fellow Wisdom’s Journey travelers, I’ve discovered another so-called “archaic” definition. It’s for the word Understanding. I believe it’s key to getting more out of today’s proverb — which is a great one.

The archaic definition is: having insight and good judgment. The “contemporary” definition: comprehension or to perceive the intended meaning of words, language, or a speaker.

Insight and good judgment. Comprehension and perception.

While the contemporary definition is okay — good actually — it’s a weak substitution for clear morals and discernment that comes from practicing GOD’s wisdom.

Insights and good judgment are foundational. They define a clear line between what is right and what is wrong. Without this foundation, our comprehension and perception will always be just off of “true north.”

I like looking at wisdom as a home. Inside the home are rooms that serve different purposes. Rooms for rest, work, preparing nutritional sustenance, and serving it to others. With wisdom, there are rooms for knowledge, discernment, peace, experience, and understanding.

To me, understanding is best implemented in the kitchen and dining room. Understanding are the hands of wisdom that serve to others.

Understanding is the part of wisdom that has gained practical insights into what is right or wrong through experience and knowledge — the perfect recipe. Because understanding is comfortable with this knowledge and is able to serve it to others, others can dine richly on those insights.

Knowledge is the continued pursuit of GOD’s wisdom. It’s done mostly for ourselves and it is good for our soul. Understanding is the insight we get from walking it out in our lives so that we can help others to gain knowledge.

The balance of archaic and contemporary

It takes a certain amount of finesse and grace to utilize understanding. What we know is a gift to us, we should treat it the same way when we present to others.

Finding ways to help others understand wisdom is an honor and an art. We can do this by spoken and written word, but also by deed and example. When we treasure understanding, we are wisdom’s host/hostess. And what better way to prosper in this Wisdom Journey?

May we prosper in wisdom, knowledge, discernment, and understanding, my friends.
