For the earth will be filled with knowing the glory of ADONAI [the LORD],
as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2:14, TLV
Knowing the Glory of GOD. The context of this chapter — the OY! (Woe is me) chapter — is that the prophet Habakkuk laments over the strength of the wicked over the just. The righteous are humiliated for their faithfulness.
Oy to him who builds a city by bloodshed,
and establishes a town with injustice!
Behold, is it not from ADONAI-Tzva’ot [the LORD of Hosts]
that peoples toil to fuel a fire,
and nations exhaust themselves for emptiness? (vss. 12-13, TLV)
Habakkuk has made his questions of injustice known to GOD. He waits to hear from Him.
I will take my stand at my post,
and station myself on the rampart,
and I will watch to see what He will say to me,
and what I will answer regarding my argument. (vs. 1, TLV)
Sound familiar. These could be the prayers of the redeemed children of the Creator of the Universe today. Then, GOD answers:
Then Adonai answered me and said:
“Write down the vision,
make it plain on the tablets,
so that the reader may run with it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time.
It hastens to the end
and will not fail.
If it should be slow in coming, wait for it,
For it will surely come—it will not delay.” (vss. 2-3, TLV)
Essentially, our Father is saying, “Don’t give up. Take My word to others. Even though My justice may seem slow, it isn’t. And at the set time — the time set before there was time — it will come to fruition.”
As with prophesies, there are near future and far future fulfillments. Eventually Israel would return from the impending captivity. And eventually, Israel will resurrect and the diaspora continue to return. But, finally, and most importantly, eventually GOD will judge those who refused to accept His loving gift of His Son — His Son’s sacrifice for our sins.
So, as we wait until the set time for “For the earth will be filled with knowing the glory of [the LORD],” let us write down the vision and run with it. Because there is a hurting world who hungers for truth and love, and we, my friends, have the words of eternal life!
