Six things Adonai hates, yes, seven are abominations to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that run to evil, a false witness who spouts lies, and one who stirs up strife among brothers. Proverbs 6:16:19, TLV
Goodness. The seven abominations have some surprising entries. Haughty eyes (a.k.a. pride)? Scheme plotting? Feet that run to evil? A false witness spouting lies? Hands that shed blood? Okay, that one makes sense. And the big one, because it is listed last: one who stirs up strife among brothers. As we ponder the previous months of 2020, there have been plenty of abominations, especially with the riots and political campaigns.
It’s easy to wring our hands in worry or point fingers in anger, but as children of the Creator of the Universe, we have a different role. First to make sure we’re not part of the problem. Next, prayer. Then, speaking truth — in wisdom and love.
Greatest of these . . .
Knowing what offends GOD deeply is helpful. It gives us insights into what is important to Him. The greatest of these abominations is unity among His children. If we concentrate on this, the other offenses fall into line.
Next time we’re offended by the abominations around us, let us first examine our own hearts, then pray and seek GOD’s will and timing to speak His truth.
