Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2, TLV
Transformed by the renewing of your mind. For many years I longed for that transformation — to be better able to discern the will of God. Our minds are like sponges. They soak up what’s around it. If I filled my brain with thoughts of this world without the balance of God’s sovereignty and omniscience, I can’t begin to discern what is good and acceptable and perfect.
If a house is built with faulty materials, the house will never be right. The same with our minds. If we build our hearts and minds with the reports of the world and not God’s report, we’ll be shaky and anxious. Discernment is built with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Likewise, understanding is built with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment. Each attribute requires the other.
How do we rightly build?
Read Proverbs (Proverbs 1:1-7). Yes, I haven’t changed my tune, “A chapter of Proverbs a day, chases the foolishness away.” Surround yourself with those who walk faith and wisdom. Create a foundation secure in the knowledge of the LORD (1 Corinthians 3:11), with our cornerstone, Jesus (Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10; Luke 20:17; Acts 4:11). Then build with good materials, and not wood, hay, and stubble which will burn in the refiner’s fire (1 Corinthians 3:12-13).
Being transformed by the renewing of our mind is not rocket science, but it certainly is arduous. It’s an every single day effort. But, oh my, the rewards of discerning God’s will in our life is worth everything.
