Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorposts. Proverbs 8:34, TLV
Are You Ready for the Adult Table? I was reviewing some of my previous blogs for chapter 8 and I thought, “Goodness, I had forgotten that insight.” And, “that theme was just as relevant today as five years ago.”
Chapter 8 is filled with wisdom and reminders of who we could be. In chapter 7, there was a seducing woman who pursued the young fool. In chapter 8, we have wisdom who pursues the naïve of all ages. So, one leads the inexperienced to pain and death, the other to wisdom and life.
Wisdom wants a commitment of readiness from us. I believe God wants us to pursue wisdom as a commitment.
At the beginning of this chapter wisdom calls to us like in chapter one, but at some point, she shouldn’t have to, right? If we are truly in a relationship with God and desire His wisdom, then shouldn’t we be watching and waiting for her?
Go to Her Gates
How do we do this? We go to her “gates.” We open Proverbs and see what wisdom has for us. We’re no longer children requiring wisdom to take our hand and tug us over to her gates, we’re ready to sit at the adult table and dine on the wisdom of the ages.
And if we think this concept is only in the TANAKH (Old Testament), think again.
About this subject there is much for us to say, and it is hard to explain since you have become sluggish in hearing. For although you ought to be teachers by this time, again you need someone to teach you the basics of God’s sayings. You have come to need milk, not solid food. For anyone living on milk is inexperienced with the teaching about righteousness—he is an infant. Hebrews 5:11-13, TLV
By the way, when the writer of Hebrews says, “…the basics of God’s sayings”, he is referring to the TANAKH as well as Yeshua’s words.
After decades of reading Proverbs each day, one would think I’ve squeezed out every drop of insight into wisdom. Not even close, my friends. There’s something either new or deeper message or a relevant reminder there at Wisdom’s Gates. I just need to show up and enter. Will you join me?
Think More About It
How do you show up at Wisdom’s Gates?
Until tomorrow, may you show up at wisdom’s gates, and may you receive insights that will bless you, my friends.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all without hesitation and without reproach; and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, without any doubting—for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:5-6, TLV
We all need wisdom. That’s kind of the reason for my devotions—that we share in this journey. How about we pray today that not only we seek God for wisdom, but they Israel and her leaders earnestly seek God’s wisdom. Sound like a plan? God bless you!
