Many a man proclaims his loyalty, but a faithful man who can find? Proverbs 20:6
Loyal or Faithful? What is the difference between loyalty and faithfulness? Loyalty has more to do with an experience or concept — right or wrong. Faithfulness has more to do with an individual and following what is right. What do I mean by that?
“. . . I tell you, He will quickly give them justice. But when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8, TLV
Yeshua wondered if He would find faith — those faithful to Him. Some people who were loyal to the idea of what the Messiah would look like, had difficulty having faith in Jesus. He didn’t fit their concept.
Many Jewish leaders at that time were loyal to those misconceptions. Rather than re-examining the Scriptures in light of Jesus and His teachings and actions, they dug in their heels and hardened their hearts.
Our experience and understanding can color our loyalty so we don’t clearly see the truth.
Faithful to Scriptures?
Are there perceptions we’re loyal to that aren’t faithful to Scriptures?
Throughout history, humanity has fallen into the trap of loyalty to ideals that were contrary to GOD’s word. The sense of superiority over other races. The right to protect a way of life at any cost. Acceptance of certain sins because it fulfilled need or objective.
We may be loyal to our right to do what we want, but at what cost?
Examining our loyalties with the lens of Scripture keeps us humble and aware of our own flesh trying to work its way into our faith journey. It also leaves us open to the Holy Spirit showing us these flawed areas.
Remnants of Past Loyalties
There may be remnants of past loyalties still in us, like a sense of superiority. Or insecurities from our past experiences that cause us to doubt GOD’s love. We want all those chains to the past broken, right?
Let’s pray that our Heavenly Father will reveal any loyalties that cause us to stumble (Hebrews 12). When He reveals them, allow the Holy Spirit to show us the truth, because the truth will set us free (John 8:32).
Think More About It
Are there loyalties you had and were freed from? Can you share what one was that helps us understand the practical freedom?
