Therefore You are great, my Lord ADONAI For there is none like You, and there is no other God besides You, as we all have heard with our ears.  2 Samuel 7:22, TLV

More than Meets the Eye.  If you haven’t already, I encourage you to read all of chapter seven. Today’s verse is more than worship. It is a response to something profound, several somethings! King David has some downtime and decides it just isn’t right that he lives in a palace of cedar, while the Almighty “resides” in a house made of curtains (vss. 1-2). David seeks the counsel of the resident prophet, Nathan about this idea.

“Go, do all that is in your heart,” Nathan said to the king, “for ADONAI is with you.” (vs. 3)

Whoops. Even the great prophet Nathan can make assumptions without checking with the LORD first. The LORD reprimands Nathan and reminds the prophet that He was fine “living” in a tabernacle (vs. 6) — a temporary dwelling.

Then something amazing happens. The Creator of the Universe makes clear that the tribe of Judah, the lineage of David, the House of David would live forever.

“Moreover, ADONAI declares to you that ADONAI will make a house for you. When your days are done and you sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your seed, who will come forth from you after you, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish his royal throne forever.” (vss. 11-13, TLV)

As with most prophecies, there were both immediate and future fulfillments. The LORD was speaking of David’s son, Solomon who would build the majestic Temple in Jerusalem — not Hebron — but, He was also speaking of His only begotten Son, Yeshua [Jesus] who would build a house/Temple of redeemed children from around the world (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). This Son of God and man (of the tribe of Judah, Matthew 1:1-6), would be the royal Sar Shalom [Prince of Peace] (Isaiah 9:5-6) — the long-awaited Messiah of Israel, the future Savior of all nations.

Imagine how King David felt to know that his lineage would be established no matter what comes. He immediately goes to ADONAI in awe and wonder:

Then King David went in and sat before ADONAI and said, “Who am I, my Lord ADONAI, and what is my family, that You have brought me this far? Yet this was a small thing in Your eyes, my Lord ADONAI—for You have spoken also of Your servant’s house for the distant future. This is a revelation for humanity, my Lord ADONAI. (vss. 18-19, TLV)

Did you catch that? The LORD gave David a prophecy. David received the revelation that it wasn’t just about his lineage being established, it was about the future for all humanity! Why would a child born a thousand years from now be important to the world? Because this Child was the Son of God, as well as the Son of David.

So, today’s verse is so much more than meets the eye. It’s a passage of revelation, prophecy, and great awe. Recorded for prosperity so that we, thousands of years later, understand the omniscient, sovereignty of our Heavenly Father. What ever “tribe” we’re from, as redeemed children of the Creator of the Universe, we are together grafted into that Jewish olive tree (Romans 11:16-24). We are one in Messiah.

Context is so important. And today’s context is a joyous reminder of our Abba Father and His Son. It is also a reminder of the significance of the Jewish people from the time of Abraham to today.

See, this verse was definitely more than meets the eye!
