Daily Word: Seeking Favor in the Wrong Places? Proverbs 19:6

Terri GillespieDaily Word, Wisdom’s Journey Through Proverbs Leave a Comment

Many seek the favor of the generous. Everyone is a friend to a giver of gifts. Proverbs 19:6, TLV

Seeking Favor in the Wrong Places?   I like receiving unexpected gifts, don’t you? A little something given to me that has nothing to do with my birthday or anniversary or holiday. Just a thoughtful expression from someone I care about, who cares about me. And that gift doesn’t have to be purchased, it can be a visit, or phone call or an invite for tea or coffee. Time is a great gift, too.

What happens when we “court” someone’s generosity? Someone who has the resources to give generously? I suppose it’s normal to be drawn to people who will give abundantly. But is that appropriate?

I’ve learned over the years that having a friend is first and foremost about being a friend.

A healthy friendship is where we actively give of ourselves — to be there emotionally, spiritually, and physically. To be present in their lives in meaningful ways. We do this not to receive anything, but it’s important to take note that a healthy friendship requires natural reciprocation. We don’t do what we do for our friends out of getting something in return, however if little to no reciprocity is present in the relationship, generally, it’s not a healthy one.

When we purposely seek the favor and friendship of someone wealthy, popular, or famous for our own agendas, we miss out on the beauty, blessing, and effort it takes to cultivate a lasting friendship.

I have friends in “high places” and our friendships are honed in fire and steel. These dear souls need “safe” friends — a refuge from the demands people make on them. They in turn give back in precious ways that have enriched my life.

Friends of another kind

What about the friends who aren’t “high profile?” Those society has pigeon-holed as not as valued?

There may be someone whom GOD wants to add to our life that we wouldn’t typically choose as a friend. There may be no outward “benefit” to their friendship, but He knows the real benefits and how it will bless others.

Treasure friendships. They are a gift from our Heavenly Father. Surround yourself with people who will help you dig deeper into who we are in Him. And, if you’re looking for a friend like that, begin by being a friend.

May we be friends, my friends.

Do you have friends that have changed your life?

If this blog has been a blessing, please share with your friends. 🙂 thank you so much!
