Daily Word: Servant or Friend? Proverbs 29:19

A servant cannot be corrected by words, for though he understands, he will not respond. Proverbs 29:19, TLV

Servant or Friend?     Before you “blink”* past this verse, I would like to call your attention to the words of Jesus in John 15:

“I am no longer calling you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing. Now I have called you friends, because everything I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15, (TLV)

In some cultures, if you save a person’s life, they become your servant for the rest of their life. Indentured by choice and gratitude. In many ways, we are like that with Yeshua. Because He not only saved us, He gave His life for our salvation. So, no question we should be His servants forever. Right? Yes and no.

Yes, in the sense that we will always be His servant as we advance His Kingdom on earth—however He has gifted us to perform.

But then, His words in John and the image of Him offering His hand, lifting me from a servant’s posture and position changes the perspective. Because, wonder of wonders, He brings me into His confidence as family and friend. How amazing is that?

Think More About It

Sometimes I need to have a picture of a message—like the image of Jesus reaching His hand toward me. Taking me from a position of someone on the periphery and inviting me to be included in heavenly things. What image comes to your mind with this proverb?

Until tomorrow, may we as His friends, serve in love. God bless you and Shabbat Shalom!

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem—
“May those who love you be at peace!
May there be shalom within your walls—
quietness within your palaces.”
For the sake of my brothers and friends,
I now say: “Shalom be within you.”
For the sake of the House of Adonai our God,
I will seek your good. Psalm 122:6-9, TLV

*A “blink” proverb is a proverb that on the surface, we don’t believe applies to us or is relevant for today. However, on closer reflection, there are significant insights and wisdom for us. Thanks to Dr. Raleigh Washington for coining the great analogy.
