Every competitor exercises self-control in all respects. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we do it to receive an imperishable one. 1 Corinthians 9:25. TLV
The Best Prize! Oh, how I love Paul’s imagery in this pericope. This verse gives us a taste of his message, but the context really gives us the story.
So I run in this way—not aimlessly. So I box in this way—not beating the air. Rather, I punish my body and bring it into submission, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. (vss. 26-27, TLV)
See that? We run this faith race, but not aimlessly. The race has purpose, which is why we need wisdom. When we “box” or fight, we’re not just beating at the air, but making contact against the enemy. It means we may surrender a few extra hours of sleep or relaxation or entertainment, but we do it.
Self-control is no joke. It’s difficult. But, we can begin where we are with small steps that will move us forward in ways we never thought possible. Begin simply. Wake up fifteen minutes earlier and pray. Before we hit the social media, read the Bible — a chapter of Proverbs is a great place to start. Find the spiritual activities we ignore because we don’t think we have time — we all have them.
The prize? It’s the best. A deeper relationship with our Father, His Son, His Spirit, and each other — for eternity. Not too shabby.
Shabbat Shalom!
