Honest balances and scales are ADONAI’s [the LORD]. All the weights in a bag are His handiwork. Proverbs 16:11, TLV
The Core of Honest Measurements. Have you ever felt cheated by a scale’s measurement at the grocery store? I’ve felt that way. Perhaps the inaccuracy was intentional, or due to neglect on the part of the store, but the result was a dishonest measure.
In Biblical times, the weights used for scales had to be accurate. Wars and feuds were waged over dishonest scales — even the suspicion of someone cheating them. Those stones or metal weights had to be true — it was at the core of honest measurement.
The Greater Scale
Today’s proverb hints at an even greater scale. This scale’s integrity lies in who God is and how He measures everything.
Whose weights are we using? Ours? The world’s? Or our Heavenly Father’s?
What do I mean by this? In the spiritual realm our Father has “weights” that represent His truth and values. How we weigh our decisions and beliefs are based on those weights. If one weight is off — even by a little –all the measurements are wrong.
The world has their own weights and measurements. They may even believe that they are honest. Especially since they adjust them to whatever they believe is truth and justice. These days, the more adjustment, the further away they are from our Father’s measurements. And, if we try using their scales, we’ll be cheated out of an authentic, GOD-driven life.
God’s Recalibration
If we seek to follow Him, then our weights are always re-calibrating. As we learn and walk out God’s truth, we adapt our weights to His. We see things differently. Deal with them differently. All because we use the weights created by the Creator of the Universe.
As we continue to live Proverbs and follow our Father and His Son, and listen to the Holy Spirit, we everyday can calibrate our scale to His. And that’s a good thing.
