Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 11:11

Terri GillespieWisdom’s Journey Through Proverbs

Are you a blessing to your city?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed. Proverbs 11:11

blinkThis might be a “Blink Proverb”* to some. But, I was thinking, it is important to know our surroundings. Could that include knowing the needs of our city or town? How about knowing the good things in our city?

If we know these things, then maybe we can be part of the solution of the problems rather than just complaining.

There are several passages in Proverbs that speak of what happens when the righteous lead a city. People rejoice. For that to happen, we have to do more than say we care, we need to do something.

We all lead busy lives. Keeping our priorities in line with Biblical living is vital to a healthy faith journey. That means God first, our spouse, children, jobs, and congregations. After that, we can reach out to the community.

What are ways we can make a difference in our communities?

  • Know the issues/concerns for our city. Vote consciously.
  • Volunteer.
  • See the good and speak positively about our town.
  • Support local events that are family-oriented.
  • Pray for the civic leaders and first-responders.
  • Pray for guidance in how or if we should become more involved.

These may seem like small, insignificant ways to make a difference. However, what if all the righteous did this? Could little changes cause big changes for good to happen? It’s worth trying, right?

I am feeling both convicted and motivated. How about you?

May we be a blessing our city, my friends.

*A “blink” proverb is a proverb that on the surface, we don’t believe applies to us or is relevant for today. However, on closer reflection, there are significant insights and wisdom for us. Thanks to Dr. Raleigh Washington for coining the great analogy.
