Today’s Blog: The Monkey Trap

TODAY’S PROVERB: The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are trapped by their desire. Proverbs 11:6, TLV

Have you ever seen a monkey trap? It’s quite simple: place a banana in a box, bottle, or gourd with a small opening. The monkey sees or smells the delicious fruit, reaches into the small hole, grabs it, and is trapped. The monkey’s fist around the banana is now much larger than the opening. He can’t pull his hand and banana out together.

Why in the world would this work? I mean, the monkey could just let go of the prize and easily remove itself from the trap. It’s effective because whoever created the device knew the nature of the monkey. They knew that the bait was more important than its freedom. It couldn’t see past its desire.

Do we have monkey traps in our life? What are we holding onto that has us trapped? Unforgiveness? Fear? Greed? Alcohol? Drugs? Food? Drama? Self-righteousness? The list, unfortunately, is endless.

Because the enemy of our soul knows our nature he is able to devise traps — temptations — that lure us in. We grab on and won’t let go, even though we lose our peace, freedom, and hope.

However, we who are redeemed by the blood of Yeshua/Jesus have the ability to defy our human nature. Our nature may be to want the banana — perhaps we’re holding it now — but our Heavenly Father can help us let it go.

Letting go of the thing that traps us seems easy, but it boils down to faith. Believing that our Father will supply what we really need. If we can, then He’ll set us free. And, He’s good at that.

May we let go of the banana, my friends.
