Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 14:33

Has wisdom found a home with you?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Wisdom rests in the heart of the discerning, and even among fools she is known. Proverbs 14:33

Image result for valentineHappy Valentine’s Day. It seems apropos that we’re talking about things of the heart. But there’s a special resident of the heart — at least, it’s possible to have it there. It’s Wisdom.

I love this proverb. There’s something peaceful about the image of wisdom finding a home in the heart and mind of a discerning person.

That sweet soul would have a humble contentment in knowing when questions arise, there will be answers. When challenges confront them, there will be peace. When needs seem to overtake them, there is hope. When uncertainty clouds their thoughts, God’s wisdom gives them clarity.

I was thinking, sometimes we treat wisdom like a guest. An honored and cherished one, nevertheless, only a guest. A guest’s stay is temporary. We make a fuss and prepare special meals. Perhaps fresh flowers at their bedside. But eventually, the guest moves on. Perhaps there is hope for another visit — or perhaps, once is enough.

We treat wisdom like a guest when we invest heartily in studying Proverbs for a season. We may invest in well-written study guides and concordances and journals, only to move on to another study. The next guest.

God’s wisdom wants to find a home in us. To be a working member of the “family.” That means:

  • Wisdom is part of our life everyday. We glean from that day’s chapter whatever God wants to show us. Wisdom can provide direction and purpose and counsel.
  • Wisdom works with us. Wisdom shouldn’t sit on a shelf looking ornate. Wisdom should be getting their hands in the soil of life — planting and reaping. Cleaning up messes. Repairing the broken.
  • Wisdom should be present. Just like a missing child, if wisdom is missing from our life we should stop what we’re doing and look until we find it.
  • Wisdom is respected and loved. Those that we love and respect are those we know well. We’ve seen them live a life of integrity. We can say wisdom is amazing, but until we’ve lived with wisdom, we have no real idea of what that means. As with anything worthwhile it takes our purposed, intentional investment of time.

When wisdom makes its home in our heart, it will be our pleasure to know things from the heart of our Heavenly Father. And that is a good thing.

May wisdom rest in our heart, my friends.
