Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 18:18

Terri GillespieWisdom’s Journey Through Proverbs

That’s a lot of lots . . .

TODAY’S PROVERB: Casting lots ends quarrels and decides between mighty opponents. Proverbs 18:18, TLV

The term “casting lot(s)” is used 77 times in the Bible. GOD instituted the casting of lots to make routine to major decisions. Not every decision was to be made this way, just specific ones.

For example . . .

Who me?

Our Heavenly Father instructed Moses’s brother Aaron as high priest of the children of Israel to cast a lot to determine which goat would be the scapegoat (Leviticus 16).

Once the children of Israel arrived into the Promised Land, the territories for each tribe were assigned by the LORD, but the families’ property lines were determine by lots (Joshua 18). Why?

The reason why He would choose this method is answered in Proverbs 16:33:

The lot is cast into the lap,
but their very decision is from Adonai.

PROVERBS 16:33, TLV

In other words, whatever the outcome of a toss to determine GOD’s will, is GOD’s will.

When situations become so emotional or complicated and we can’t hear from the LORD, it’s nice to know He can speak through anything to get our attention. I wonder, would lots work today?

Then the question becomes: Why not use lots all the time? Because, I don’t know about you, I would get lazy about seeking to hear from our Heavenly Father. If I could just toss a couple dice to get an answer from Father, it wouldn’t be long before I don’t talk to Him very much.

The lots were never intended to replace seeking Him. They were merely a tool to help us in certain situations. So unless we’re choosing goats or breaking up a fight, coming to our Abba first is best. On second thought, let’s just go to Him first, first.

May we pay attention to GOD’s direction, my friends.
