Today’s Blog: Prudence?
TODAY’S PROVERB: House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from Adonai. Proverbs 19:14, TLV
Prudence. It’s an old-fashioned word. Its definition: the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason. You can see why it’s considered an outdated virtue, because in today’s world, discipline gets a bad rap. And to discipline ourselves? Who would want to do that?
In today’s proverb the legacy of earthly fathers may be wealth and a house, but God’s gift to a man is a wife who is prudent. For she is an accomplished woman with more value than jewels (Proverbs 31:10). And more value than their housekeeper.
What I find interesting is that the pursuit of prudence — that old-fashioned virtue — ironically means a woman will study the law and wisdom. She is diligent to pursue knowledge, compassion, grace, and the perfect casserole recipe. Management, financial acumen, fashion, mentoring, parenting, and household maintenance are part of her everyday routine.
Can you imagine what the world would be like if the menfolk would realize the treasure of God’s gift? Setting women free to become prudent women, wives, mothers, and daughters? To accept the gift with joy and to walk out marriages with honor and respect?
For too many years in our marriage, I didn’t understand my role. My relationship went the gamut of servant, to rival, to — at last — partner. My submission to my husband with prudence means I have more freedom than ever before. It also means I have covering, and that is critical in this world.
The Challenge . . .
My challenge to my sisters? Pursue prudence. Ask our Heavenly Father what that means for each of us. He has a plan.
My challenge to my brothers. Pursue prudence. Because when you understand it, you will recognize it and treasure it as the gift that it is.
May we seek prudence, my friends.
