Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 20:12

Today’s Blog: What do we see and hear?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Ears that hear and eyes that see—Adonai has made them both. Proverbs 20:12, TLV

Not every ear can hear. Not every eye can see. But our Heavenly Father has given everyone the ability to “hear” and “see” through His word. To understand profound insights.

There’s a powerful passage in Psalms (Psalm 115: 2-8) that speaks of the idols of the pagan nations. How these people may fashion ears and mouths and eyes and hands, but the idols aren’t able to perform the simplest of tasks. Which seems logical to us today. However, the passage ends on a profound note that is worth investigating further.

Those making them will become like them
—everyone trusting in them.

PSALM 115:12, TLV [EMPHASIS MINE]

That line made me think of all the potential idols around us. The media being a very compelling one for most everyone. How many times have we taken the “word” of a talking head or a social media post over God’s truth? I know I have had moments of watching horrible images of abused children and wondering, “Where was our loving Father?”

What “fills” our mind?

Filling our minds with these images changes us. Early research on the effects of viewing violence on television — especially among children — found a desensitizing effect and the potential for aggression. “They will become like them.”

“Leave them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

JESUS SPEAKING OF UNBELIEVING RELIGIOUS LEADERS, MATTHEW 15:14, TLV

When we fill our minds with His word, our hearts transform into more of who our Father created us to be. No matter our eyesight, no matter our hearing, we will be acute and discerning. We will see the truth.

When the “idols” of this world attempt to draw us away from eternal truth, go back to what we know — the basic truths indelibly imprinted in our souls — and seek the Holy Spirit for more insights He longs to share with us.

May we truly “see” and “hear” the truth, my friends.
