Today’s Blog: Are you an iceberg?
TODAY’S PROVERB: All a man’s ways seem right in his own eyes, but Adonai weighs the heart. Proverbs 21:2, TLV
We all know the story of the Titanic, but did you know over 25 ships have sunk as a result of running into icebergs? Five ships since the Titanic. One as recently as 2007. Fortunately, no one perished in that sinking.
With all our sophisticated technology you’d think those sorts of accidents could be avoided. But, icebergs are deceptive. About 90% of the iceberg is submerged. And, the longer it floats, the more ice it accumulates.
Are we like icebergs?
In yesterday’s blog (Proverbs 20:5), we talked about how our intent can be hidden deep within us. Today’s proverb speaks of us believing our way seems right, but the LORD weighs what’s really in our heart. In other words, sometimes we know our motivation and intent aren’t pure, and sometimes we don’t.
Are we like icebergs — and don’t even realize it?
- Is our thought-life becoming increasingly more focused on inappropriate thinking?
- Are we noticing an increase in anger and lust and envy and rejection, and have to work hard to hide them?
- Do we feel a compulsion to always perform — to the point that we sometimes alienate people?
- Are we great at volunteering and working, but poor at relationships?
- Do “accidents” happen around us? Like people getting their feelings hurt?
If we’re experiencing one or more of these events, we may have an iceberg within us.
We know our Heavenly Father sees below our surface. He sees our heart and intent. When He thinks we’re ready, He will attempt to show us what’s below our surface. That something requiring us deal with it.
When that happens, it might seem too big.
As the Holy Spirit begins revealing these big issues, we might be afraid that if people really knew how angry, insecure, ignorant, bitter, sinful, depressed, or hateful we were they would run in the opposite direction. So, we try to conceal them with good deeds, or we isolate ourselves, or worse, disappear from community.
The longer we let things go, the bigger it will become. The more it accumulates.
It’s not too big . . .
Nothing is too difficult for our Father! (Genesis 18:14) Our big, complicated, ugly iceberg is not too big for Him. Believe that. Then, begin the first step by seeking where and what He wants to tackle.
For me, He started with bringing up memories that carried strong emotions. I would lay the emotions before Him and ask what He wanted me to do next. Usually, it was to forgive. Then, because that big emotion most likely caused hurt to others, I repented for my part in that. If possible, I would apologize to the wounded parties.
Depending upon how deep that iceberg was, I might need to sit in His presence until I received the sense of release. Finally, I thanked Him — which wasn’t difficult at all. The freedom I felt was amazing.
If you’re realizing there might be an iceberg in your heart, pray for wisdom and discernment. It may catch you by surprise, but as you and the LORD work together, it will make sense. And the freedom? It’s worth the effort, tears, and time. And no more Titanics around us.
May we allow the LORD to crush the icebergs in our life, my friends.
