Substance Abuse, in the Bible?
TODAY’S PROVERB:
Who has woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has fights? Who has complaining?
Who has bruises for no reason?
Who has red eyes? Proverbs 23:29, TLV
Substance Abuse. Whether alcohol, prescription medications, or illegal or “recreational” drugs, indulgence brings with it a probable chance of addiction. That addiction will affect the body, mind, and spirit of the individual and those who love them.
Anything we use to dull or numb pain for extended periods of time will inevitably have detrimental affects. Because, no matter how effective we may think it is for a season, it does alter our ability to handle real life. Whatever triggered our need will have to be dealt with eventually.
Please note that those with chemical imbalances are not the same as those who indulge in the euphoric or calming properties of these substances.
Fortunately, there are more and more resources available to individuals and family members. Many are faith-based.
What is also interesting to me with today’s passage (as well as the verses that follow) is that once again we have proof as to how relevant the Bible is to us. Read on to the end of the chapter and you’ll see a thoughtful, descriptive understanding of addiction.
If we struggle with addiction, or people we love do, know that there is hope. That hope requires commitment, but within these pages is the wisdom to support that commitment.
Seek help. Seek support. And, most important, seek GOD.
May we seek the solution, my friends.
