Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 25:26

Is compromise okay?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Like a muddied spring or a polluted well is a righteous person who yields before the wicked. Proverbs 25:26, TLV

Compromise for a peaceable environment has many successful forms — there are viable options to the goal of agreement for disagreeing parties. However, compromising with evil muddies truth and pollutes the outcome.

This applies to everything from negotiations between countries to siblings.

I guess at its foundation, crossing a boundary into evil, even for the sake of trying to appease an enemy, will not truly be a resolution. When it comes to truth or righteousness, we must stand our ground. Even at the risk of failed resolutions and/or being accused of being unreasonable. Or prejudiced. Or stupid.

Being unyielding, immovable, and “stubborn” in the areas of foundational Biblical principles will never be comfortable or popular. It never has been. But, it’s the right thing to do.

“I hate confrontations!”

For those of us who don’t like confrontation, this standing firm in a conflict can be difficult. In our effort to “resolve and run,” we may compromise because of fear and intimidation. Honestly, it’s not always crystal clear how to respond in the moment — especially when the other party(ies) are angry.

Still, our Heavenly Father sees our heart. And He wants us to be set free from fear. That generally means He’ll give us more opportunities to learn.

Owning our “mud” by repenting and learning how to do better makes us stronger. And that makes our Father smile.

May our springs and wells be clear, my friends.
