Today’s Blog: A Door? A Slacker?
TODAY’S PROVERB: As a door turns on its hinges, so a slacker turns on his bed. Proverbs 26:14, TLV
Ever wonder what a door and slacker have in common? Me, too. Apparently, just as a door swings back and forth but itself doesn’t go anywhere, so the slacker may move back and forth in his bed, but isn’t going anywhere. That definition makes sense. It got me thinking, am I slacking in other areas of my life? Moving, but not going forward? “Walking” in circles and not going anywhere?
I guess we can be spiritual slackers. Suppose we are corrected, or the Holy Spirit convicts us of things we need to change or repent of — do we toss and turn, but really never change? We’re moving, but not going forward in certain areas of our walk?
What might that look like? Perhaps we know we need to forgive, repent or change or walk out a new course, but we are stuck reasoning another way around it. Or maybe, we turn back and forth with blaming others who caused us to sin or made us feel inadequate. Could it be we’re just afraid to come out from under the blankets and embark on a new endeavor God has called us to?
From horizontal to vertical
How do we go from “horizontal” to “vertical and mobile?” How do we leave that “bed” behind? Meditating on passages that give us clear guidance, is one way to jump start our exit from the comforts of a warm bed. Here are a few that help me:
One who covers up his transgressions will not prosper,
PROVERBS 28:13
but whoever confesses and forsakes them finds mercy.
“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Then Peter came to Him and said, “Master, how often shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?”

“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity but of power and love and self-discipline.”

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and the one who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

Another way is to seek counsel from trustworthy believers. But ultimately, my friends, we need to throw back the covers and set our feet on the floor. Open the curtains to let the light in and begin our new day of possibilities — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Be assured, our Father is there. Jesus has modeled how to follow His Dad and shows us how grace and mercy work. And, the Holy Spirit will point the way.
