Sarcasm is not a joke

TODAY’S PROVERB: Like a madman shooting firebrands and deadly arrows so is one who deceives his friend, and says, “I was only joking.” Proverbs 26:18-19, TLV

Sarcasm is like rotten fruit. And, sarcasm has no more place in a relationship than a moldy apple or lemon or orange.

SARCASM IS DEFINED AS:
a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain .

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

It’s not always easy to discern when someone uses sarcasm against us. If someone you know has to regularly identify their remarks as a joke, then most likely they are speaking in sarcasm. They’re trying to tell us something for certain — but it’s not a joke.

People who speak in sarcasm deceive with painful arrows and firebrands. Their intention is to communicate a message that pierces and burns. In the hands of someone we call a friend, it is a sign that all is not well with the relationship.

If what we say “in jest” is hurtful to another, calling it a joke cannot hide the stench of rottenness.

If we’re frustrated with someone and find ourselves resorting to venting that frustration with sarcasm, go the the LORD and deal with our need to shoot firebrands and deadly arrows. Someone can be offending us, but when we retaliate, it becomes our issue. We’re becoming someone our heavenly Father doesn’t want us to be.

If we need to confront a person about an issue, let our message carry the sweet taste of truth — even when it’s a difficult message to give.

May our words have the goal of building up and not tearing down, my friends.
