Today’s Blog: A thorny post
TODAY’S PROVERB: Like a thorn bush in a drunkard’s hand is a proverb in a fool’s mouth. Proverbs 26:9, TLV
Most likely this is a passage we have blinked past. I sure did. But, today I thought we could tackle the meaning of this obscure verse. Over the years, when I’ve come across this proverb the first word that comes to mind is stupidity. Who in their right mind would handle a thorn bush? Apparently, a drunk.
Unfortunately, over the years, I’ve known a lot of folks who spent too much time inebriated. In a group/party setting the one fool who had to outdo all the others usually did something dangerous, stupid, illegal, or deadly — or all the above. In too many cases, the antics affected others.
How is this like a proverb in a fool’s mouth?
Someone who believes they are wise and desires to dish out that knowledge to others, will in the best of circumstances be useless, in the worst, dangerous.
A fool is someone who talks, but doesn’t walk the talk. They want the power of wisdom without the responsibilities. The pride of telling others what to do is very tempting.
“Leave them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”
JESUS, MATTHEW 15:14, TLV
Those with discernment can spot the person who wields wisdom without accountability to our Heavenly Father. If we’re not sure, search the Scriptures. Pray. Observe the person’s fruit. The concern is always those who don’t have the experience or spiritual maturity to realize someone is yielding a “thorn bush.”
On the other hand . . .
On the other hand, when we find someone wearing a mantle of that practical wisdom that comes from the Creator of the Universe, cherish them. Pray for them. It’s not an easy road. They are just as prone to wielding thorns if they don’t stay humble and live His word.
May we live His wisdom, my friends.
