Today’s Blog: Working Your Land?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Whoever works his land will be satisfied with food, but whoever chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. Proverbs 28:19, TLV

For those of us who aren’t farmers or gardeners, what can “working the land” mean to us? Simply, it means we do the work we’re responsible for — what we’re given to do — with an eye toward the future. And, in that process, make the best use of our resources to accomplish it.

When we put on the uniform and plastic gloves, we smile and take the drive-thru food order with gratitude — even during lunch hour. Maybe it’s the only smile they’ll receive today.

We put on the coveralls and pay attention when the customer tries to describe the odd noise his vehicle is making — instead of rolling our eyes. Perhaps the repair saves their lives.

It’s looking in the fridge and pantry at dinner time and making the best with what’s there rather than running for take-out. Knowing we’re saving money we can give to others.

Deeper than stewardship

Sounds a lot like stewardship. But it’s a bit deeper. It’s stewardship with prudence — it’s care, caution, and good judgment, as well as wisdom in looking ahead. It’s tending the “seeds” in our life by “weeding” out what limits the harvest.

If we believe our Heavenly Father has given us the “land” — whatever that may represent — then “working” it well is our honor as well as responsibility.

To spend our emotions and time trying to chase after something He didn’t give us is not only a fantasy, it’s foolish.

“One who is faithful in the smallest matters is also faithful in much, and the one unjust in the smallest matters will likewise be unjust in much. So then, if you cannot be trusted with unjust wealth, who will trust you with true wealth?”

JESUS, LUKE 16:10-11, TLV

While our “land” may not be glamorous or enviable, it’s what we’ve been given for such a time as this. But, remember when we’re good stewards of the small things, He’ll trust us with more.

May we work our land, my friends.
