Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 29:19

Servant or friend?

TODAY’S PROVERB: A servant cannot be corrected by words, for though he understands, he will not respond. Proverbs 29:19, TLV

Before you “blink”* past this verse, I would like to call your attention to the words of Jesus in John 15:

“I am no longer calling you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing. Now I have called you friends, because everything I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

JOHN 15:15, TREE OF LIFE VERSION (TLV)

In some cultures, if you save a person’s life, they become your servant for the rest of their life. Indentured by choice and gratitude. In many ways, we are like that with Yeshua. Because He not only saved us, He gave His life for our salvation. So, no question we should be His servants forever. Right?

But then, I remember His words and I imagine Him offering His hand, lifting me from a servant’s posture and position. Then, wonder of wonders, He brings me into His confidence as family and friend. How amazing is that?

May we as His friends, serve in love.

*A “blink” proverb is a proverb that on the surface, we don’t believe applies to us or is relevant for today. However, on closer reflection, there are significant insights and wisdom for us. Thanks to Dr. Raleigh Washington for coining the great analogy.
