Today’s Blog: A House Divided or United?

TODAY’S PROVERB: There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother. Proverbs 30:11, TLV

Tucked within this verse are years of lessons for us. Depending upon the season of our life — childhood, adulthood, and all the roles we hold as we age — the lessons continue. Honoring our parents have varying levels of active responsibility.

As a child, it’s all about honoring our parents through obedience and the lessons they teach us. Once we’re adults, it’s about honoring our parents for what they have sown into our life — and still offer us.

As our parents age and become more dependent upon others, we still have a responsibility to them — to help them as we’re able. This is a new way of honoring and blessing them.

A House Divided?

And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

JESUS, MARK 3:25, TLV

The passage above was within the context of Yeshua deflecting the illogical accusations from His critics — that He was casting out demons by satan. Still, the verse holds truth for us. A “house” divided can’t stand. This applies to the importance of honoring our parents.

When our house — our family — is divided, it keeps us from the blessings that come from a tight knit family. Because, we know that unity provides so many benefits, the most important, it proclaims that Yeshua is the One that the Father sent for our redemption (John 17:20-26).

However, not all parents were the best at parenting. Not all childhoods were “happy,” yet we’re still commanded by GOD to honor them.

Giving our parents the gift of honor is our choice — to obey or not obey. Even in the best circumstances, it can be a challenge for us emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially. But, we obey not only because it’s a wise investment for the future of our house, but our Heavenly Father commands it.

We all age. In twenty years, I hope someone will step up and help us when the time comes, but in the meantime, I want to be part of the generation that blesses my parents.

May we bless our parents, and those like them, my friends.
