Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 3:11

Today’s Blog: Dreading the storm?

TODAY’S PROVERB: My son, never despise Adonai’s discipline or dread His correction. Proverbs 3:11, TLV

So. A show of e-hands: Who dreads correction? As much as I know I need correction — at least from time to time — there’s still that tensing of the body, racing of the heart, blushing of the cheeks . . . Well, you get the idea.

What I’ve learned over the years is if I can quiet my mind to listen to whomever is giving me the correction, I can better listen to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit will either confirm or question what has been given.

Discipline reminds me a lot of a storm. While correction, more like a rain shower on a picnic. In most cases, neither is convenient. The thunder and lightning are a bit scary. But, for the most part, the rain is helpful and sometimes, critically needed.

The next time someone sends a discipline storm our way, try to calmly wait it through. Does it replenish and help, or does it cause damage? Ask the Holy Spirit if this is from our Father, or meant to harm us.

When the correction rain shower rains on our picnic, try to calmly wait it through. Then pray for the Holy Spirit’s discernment to determine, was the rain helpful, or did it distract from our plans?

Maybe someday I won’t dread the storms or showers, but instead wait patiently to see what they produce in me. How about you?

May we learn from the storms and rains our Father sends our way, my friends.
