Today’s Blog: Losing Power?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention, to gain understanding. Proverbs 4:1

Today’s proverb reminds me of a funny public service announcement (PSA) a power company produced. You see, there’s a little known menace who regularly takes down our power grids. Across the U.S. they sneak in and do more damage than any hacker. Who is this nemesis? Squirrels.

Yep. It seems squirrels are as proficient at knocking out our power for hours as they are at stealing from bird feeders. The problem is, as yet no perpetrator has survived.

So, this power company wanted to let their customers know that they were on the case and had developed what they hoped were critter guards and automated switching capabilities.

Trying to bring some humor into the situation, they produced a PSA explaining the problem and their failed attempts at resolving it. One in particular reminds me of today’s verse.

Pay attention!

A nerdy man stood in front of a classroom of unruly squirrels. He tried to give them a safety lesson. He’d point to diagrams of power lines with warning messages on the chalkboard. He’d call some of the little guys by name. Finally, in a whiny, nasally voice he stamped his foot and cried, “Pay attention!”

The fuzzy-tailed rodents continued to scamper over desks and chairs, eat pencils, and did everything except . . . Pay attention!

It’s funny, of course, but the reality is those crafty squirrels were missing an important lesson — a message that could save their life. [BTW, I tried finding the commercial to share, but couldn’t. If you do, I’d love the link.]

I don’t want to be like a squirrel when our Heavenly Father is trying to warn or instruct me. I just want to be still and . . . pay attention.

For some of us, that’s a difficult thing. Families, jobs, and all sorts of demands can pull us from quiet. Others of us have the added issue of varying degrees of ADHD. (I’m one of those.) But, guess what, we can find a few minutes each day to spend time with the Creator of the Universe. We could even — gasp — wake up a few minutes earlier and find a quiet place to sit at His feet.

Let’s not be like the squirrels that scamper from one demand to the next without investing in our relationship with the Most High — our Power Source. Who knows, it could save our life.

May we all PAY ATTENTION and gain much instruction, my friends.
