Who do you resemble?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your relative. Proverbs 7:4

Wisdom wants to be our sister? How amazing is that? I’m the eldest of five. I have the

unique roles of being the eldest sibling and sister. Over the years, I’ve noticed there are certain mannerism we all share as men and women. These can be environmental and part of our DNA. I look a lot like my father, and so does one of my brothers. Three of us look related, the other two look related to each other. We all have the high cheekbones.

Most importantly, we share history and experiences. Personal stories. Funny stories. Tragic stories. We share the family and individual triumphs, defeats, sorrows and joys. There’s a deep well of knowledge of our past. A lifetime.

Having recently lost one of my sisters, Alicia, I can tell you there are a lot of things I took for granted that I miss now. Terribly. The camaraderie of shared interests and hopes. I miss her love, friendship, and insights — and her indomitable courage and humor. We spoke several times a week for most of our adult life.

Because I understand the elder sister role, I may have a bit of insight into how wisdom might “feel” about us. More than anything, I want my siblings to succeed in life. To know they are cherished by the Creator of the Universe in ways beyond our imagination.

As the first to go through life, I have experiences and counsel that could help them avoid some mistakes in their life, but they don’t always see me in that role. They think I’m bossy and a know-it-all sometimes. And that can hurt. Still, they are my family. And I love them and pray the best for them.

Having a “sister relationship” with wisdom is one of my greatest treasures. If I don’t “talk” with her everyday, I feel like I’m missing something important. Insights I might need for that day or week or lifetime. Wisdom that could help me navigate the challenges and decisions before me.

“Wisdom” and I have history. When I’ve accepted the wise advise given I’ve seen great victories. When I didn’t, well, you can imagine. And whether I failed or succeeded, my Heavenly Father was there to either pick up the pieces or applaud the victories. And I believe He loves that His wisdom and I get along so well.

As my “elder sister” I need her counsel and want to emulate her mannerisms. And even more, that I look like my Father.

Wisdom is our heritage and our legacy. I wonder, does that mean others recognize the “family” resemblance?

May we have a great relationship with our “sister,” my friends.
