Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 8:10-11

Today’s Blog: Wisdom is Better?

TODAY’S PROVERB: Receive my instruction instead of silver and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than jewels,
nothing you desire compares with her. Proverbs 8:10-11, TLV

How much wealth is enough? Most of Proverbs was penned by a man who was arguably the wealthiest king of his time. Easy for him to say that wisdom is more valuable than riches, right?

But, King Solomon learned the hard way that acquiring wealth, popularity, and power takes an incredible amount of energy — and little by little can change who you are. Initially his wisdom served Israel well. Later, for his own gain and glory.

Ironically, that misuse caused the split in the kingdom he had inherited from his father, David. Only 2 tribes remained with him (Judah, Benjamin. The Levites split between the two kingdoms). He lost the northern portion of the kingdom called Israel due to his infidelity to GOD.

Proverbs instruct us that wisdom can enable us to live a prosperous life — but there are many definitions of prosperity. For some of us, it doesn’t necessarily mean wealth in the world’s sense.

I have come to believe that our Heavenly Father chooses individuals to wear a mantle of wealth. There are a lot of rich people, however, few wear the mantle. If the wisest man in the world had difficulty wearing that mantle, then we should be cautious of asking for it.

Instead — for me, at least . . .

“…Give me neither poverty nor riches,
but feed me with my allotted bread,
lest I become satisfied and deny You
    and say, “Who is
Adonai?”
Or lest I become poor, and steal
and profane the Name of my God.”

PROVERBS 30: 8b-9, TLV

Whether our Father has given us that mantle or not, our incentive for making our way in this life should be to give Him glory and expand His kingdom. And what He so generously holds out to us is the opportunity to live this life wisely and with honor.

May we seek to live wisely, my friends.
