A Crooked Path? Sigh. There are so many scammers out there it’s difficult to be on the alert. Internet. Social Media. Some are even trying to get in our homes. By the way, only open the door if we know who is knocking!
The second chapter of Proverbs has great, encouraging messages, but there are also some — shall we say — warnings to those who ignore wisdom. Yet, even in these warnings are good insights into human behavior.
Today’s verse speaks of crooked paths and devious ways. It reminded me of the saying: “Simplicity is indeed often the sign of truth and a criterion of beauty.” (Mahlon Hoagland) In other words, a crooked path’s destination is seldom truth.
Crooked Paths
Why would a path be crooked? Most likely because it is avoiding 
something — some type of obstacle. In relationships, that obstacle could be part of the deception.
Have you ever encountered someone who begins a conversation or argument, then over time, they circle around and end up going in the opposite direction? What you thought they were saying ended up being completely different than what you thought—or they switched direction intentionally? Finally, you wonder why you were having the discussion in the first place.
This sort of phenomenon happens a lot with double-minded people. Their defense of their position isn’t nearly as important as besting us. In fact, as they encounter our deflection or presentation of facts, their path changes in illogical ways.
In most cases, they don’t realize they’re doing it. These folks have such a fear of being wrong, they have a difficult time admitting it. But if this continues
Of course, we can be guilty of that from time to time. We all make mistakes. If while we’re trying to defend our opinion, and realize — oops — we were mistaken, don’t take a crooked path. Admit the mistake, as quickly as possible.
Intentional Deception
People who intentionally deceive will behave in a similar manner. Be wary of folks who lead us down a complicated, circuitous road with a specific agenda. Generally, they are masters of manipulation.
If we feel things are getting complicated and we’re not sure if we’re being led down a path not of our own choosing, step away from the situation. Don’t decide while actively in the discussion. No matter how convincing the person may be, if we “sense” something isn’t right, it most likely isn’t right.
When we continue engaging in the conversation, even if we present questions and factual information, they will divert and deflect until we’re exhausted. We may give in simply to make it stop. That could have disastrous results. Take it from me.
In the end, life throws us enough curves — we don’t need any 
unnecessary ones. Live a life of wisdom by studying GOD’s wisdom. Understand His truth, so we recognize the lie.
