Humility is Freedom?       Chag Semeach!    For too many years I thought that humility was synonymous with weakness. Actually, it is quite the opposite. It takes a lot of strength to be humble, by choice.

Humility is freedom from pride.

Let that sink in.

If we truly want to emulate our Heavenly Father’s Son, Jesus it begins with humility. How ironic. We are adopted by the Creator of the Universe, who went out of His way to redeem us by sending His only Son, adopt us as His children, and He wants us to be humble about it? Yep.

Think of the alternative. A bunch of bratty, disobedient kids who think only of themselves.

Oh. Right. Are we seeing a lot of that behavior in the Body of Messiah? Unfortunately, yes.

Not a great reflection on our Heavenly Father, or the sacrifice of His Son.

Royalty vs. Humility

Lately, as the world grows darker, we are seeing a lot of disfunction among our brothers and sisters. Could it be that we are more focused on being royalty than being grateful and in turn, humble? I feel that one.

Another form of pride is self-preservation — a.k.a. selfishness. Selfishness protects our own interests rather than serving others.

This has nothing to do with healthy, wise boundaries, however, we can walk a fine line that is easily crossed into selfishness. We need His wisdom, discernment, and understanding.

Finding freedom from pride and selfishness is a lifelong pursuit for some. It will probably be for me. But thankfully, I am learning more each day how to be grateful and that gratitude is teaching me how to live out humility—little by little.

Have you ever meditated on the image of Jesus washing His disciples feet during the Passover Seder? All twelve of them. Including one who would betray Him and one who would deny Him three times. How does that impact your humility journey?
