The Torah of ADONAI is perfect,
    restoring the soul.
The testimony of ADONAI is trustworthy,
making the simple wise.  Psalm 19:8[7]

Perfect and Trustworthy. I love a majestic scene. The ocean. Mountains. A perfect sunset or sunrise. Pick a natural beauty, and there’s no doubt in our minds there is an awesome Creator. We can praise that Creator and sigh in wonder at the evidence of His power. That’s basically the way David begins this psalm:

The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky shows His handiwork.  (vs. 2[1], TLV)

Yes, we can marvel at GOD’s handiwork, and that’s a good thing. A helpful reminder of the awesomeness of our Heavenly Father — part of His character. His creation puts into perspective the difference between humanity and El Elyon — The Most High GOD — because our creations pale in comparison. But, does that alone explain how to have a relationship with Him. How to know Him — and ourselves?

Who can discern his errors?
Cleanse me of hidden faults. (vs. 13[12], TLV)

In today’s verse, David explains the other side to our relationship as the created, with the Creator of the Universe. David extols GOD’s Torah (the Law contained in the first five books of the Bible) and His testimony of truth, holiness, and love. Then goes deeper into the reality of who we are — flawed and with sin.

Psalm 19 is a vivid expression of a balanced relationship with our Creator and Father. If we only focus on the wonder of what He has created, we miss the importance of knowing what is important to Him. On the other hand, if we only focus on what we’re to do for Him, we miss the wonder.

My personality is a doer and a people-pleaser. Sometimes I forget to pause and look around me at the magnificence, the gift of GOD’s creation. We need both, don’t you think? The perfection of His creation and the trustworthiness of who He is. That’s a perfect relationship.
