Daily Word: The Funny Thing About Prophecy. Isaiah 9:6

Of the increase of His government and shalom there will be no end—on the throne of David and over His kingdom—to establish it and uphold it through justice and righteousness from now until forevermore. The zeal of ADONAI-Tzva’ot [the LORD of Hosts] will accomplish this. Isaiah 9:6, TLV

The Funny Thing about Prophecy. It’s not linear. Perhaps this is because our Heavenly Father is omniscient—time is irrelevant—and He gives us pieces of revelation when, well, when it is relevant.

Take today’s verse. It followed this verse:

For to us a child is born, a son will be given to us, and the government will be upon His shoulder. His Name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, My Father of Eternity,  Prince of Peace. (vs. 5, TLV)

Now this verse seems to fall in line with our Messiah’s birth, yet it also includes the echad—oneness of the Three. A mystery that is still difficult to wrap our minds around.

With verse six—today’s verse—we’re given revelation into our future. A future that will never end because our Father has established it as well as the throne for His Son at His right Hand. Justice and righteousness will be accomplished for all. For those covered in His Son’s atoning blood, we experience a grace and mercy others will not.

So, what does all this mean? To me, it means our hubris sometimes gets in the way of prophecy. Calculations, watching the stars and headlines will only land us in the same place. Frustration and disappointment. We interpret with finite minds what are infinite concepts.

Why have prophecies, then? Because one day, they will be fulfilled and, hopefully, we’ll recognize them. In that anticipation, we wait and listen and work. I sometimes wonder if folks spent as much time helping the poor as they did trying to figure out Yeshua’s ETA the world would look a whole lot different.

As we enter this New Year, pray and ponder what our Father wants to show us for this year. It might be as simple—and as difficult—as trusting Him despite what we see going on around us. To not give up but give in to His will. To be His Hands and Feet, and heart. Somehow, I think that’s something we can count on for eternity. How about you?
