Pardon My Geekiness!

Getting to know established and award-winning authors is just as fun for me as it is for my readers and friends. Why? Because authors are readers, too, which means we can get geeky as much as the next reader. So, I warned you, here is me showing my geekiness,  my friend.

Tamera Alexander is the Christy Award–winning and USA Today bestselling author of numerous books, including Colors of Truth, With This Pledge, A Lasting Impression, A Note Yet Unsung, To Whisper Her Name, and more. Her richly drawn characters and thought-provoking plots have earned her devoted readers worldwide. [I am one of them!] Tamera and her husband make their home in Nashville, where they enjoy life with their adult children and precious grandchild, who live nearby. Add two rambunctious but lovable Australian Terriers to the mix, and life is pretty full and rich!

Tammy and her family

Tamera’s latest release, A Million Little Choices was an all-night-read for me. Just when I thought the story was one thing, it became another, too. Yes! I’m talking about a dual timeline plot, which has become my favorite sub-genre–how about you?

Published by Tyndale House Publishers for Focus on the Family, A Million Little Choices has a thought-provoking message for us all. Here’s the publisher’s synopsis:

Sometimes secrets just won’t stay hidden . . .

Now from USA Today bestselling author and Christy Award Hall of Fame inductee Tamera Alexander comes the story of two women from different centuries living in the same house who share strikingly similar journeys.

Claire Powell’s life is turned upside down when her beloved husband admits to a “near affair.” But when Stephen accepts a partnership with an Atlanta law firm without consulting her and buys a historic Southern home sight-unseen—it pushes their already- fractured marriage to the breaking point. Claire’s world spirals, and she soon finds herself in a marriage she no longer wants, in a house she never asked for.

In 1863, Charlotte Thursmann, pregnant and trapped in a marriage to an abusive husband, struggles to protect her unborn child and the enslaved members of her household. Desperate, she’s determined to right the evils her husband and others like him commit. But how can one woman put an end to such injustice? Especially if her husband makes good on his threat to kill her?

Both Claire and Charlotte discover truths about themselves they never realized, along with secrets long hidden that hold the power to bring God’s restoration—if only they choose to let it.

Wow! See why I loved this book and gave it a five-star rating?

Baby Leo

What did you read as a child? Or, what did/do you read to your children/grandchildren?

One of my greatest joys right now is reading to our grandson, Leo, who is nine months old. We’re reading lots of different books, but he’s especially fond of the Roger Priddy books. The See, Touch, Feel (Sensory) series. They’re wonderful! If any of our listeners have books that they’d recommend for early childhood, I’d love to know.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently writing a standalone novel for Tyndale Publishers. The working title is Miss Mary Bobo’s Boardinghouse and it’s based on the real history of, you guessed it, Miss Mary Bobo’s Boardinghouse in historic Lynchburg, TN. Which, incidentally, is the same town where Jack Daniel’s whiskey is made. And since Jack ate at Miss Mary’s quite often back in the day, we just might catch glimpses of him in the story.

What is the best writing tip you ever received? How was it helpful?

“Give yourself permission to write badly. That’s the only way you’ll ever learn to write well.” I have a brutal internal editor who can really end up stifling my creativity. So I often have to give myself permission to just get the first draft down, however flawed it is—just get the story down and then I can go back and fix it and make it better. Easier said than done.
