Daily Word: Are We His Faithful Messengers? Proverbs 25:13

Like the coolness of snow at harvest time is a faithful messenger to those who send him, for he refreshes his master’s soul. Proverbs 25:13, TLV

Are We His Faithful Messengers?    The word messenger conjures up all sorts of images. Bike messengers zipping through the mean streets of the big city delivering important packages in a timely manner. Electronic applications that deliver real-time messages from our virtual friends.

But the messengers of the Bible played a more vital role — they represented the person sending the message.

This messenger could carry a simple communication of hope and support, or a complex set of instructions strategic to a battle. It was even more than recitation or a precious scroll, they carried the heart of their master.

A faithful messenger not only wanted to convey the missive perfectly, but they also brought the intent. There was no guile. Any deception could bring war, sorrow, discouragement. Because any message not from the heart of the sender was deception.

No matter the peril . . .

The perils for a messenger were great. Because the messenger never knew what the journey or the reaction of the receiver would be. At the best a few bumps and bruises, at worst death. What if they were injured or killed, and the word never arrived? The fate of a kingdom could be affected. A good and faithful messenger took those responsibilities and held them as sacred.

Yeshua, the Ultimate Messenger

When I think of Yeshua — Jesus — I think of the ultimate Messenger. He frequently explained that He only spoke His Father’s message. But He also represented His Father’s intent — and He gave His life for it.

“For I did not speak on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and speak. And I know that His commandment is life everlasting. Therefore, what I say, I say just as the Father has told Me.” John 12:49-50, TLV

We, too, are His messengers. Do we bring both an accurate word, and His intent? Or do we only speak His words? Or only speak of His intent? That balance of conviction, love, and forgiveness is important to keep His message pure. In other words, do we just communicate that we are sinners, or do we also share that our Savior leaves the 99 to find us (Luke 15:4).

Knowing that our faithfulness as His messengers can refresh our Master is a blessing beyond measure!
