If someone would threaten to remove chocolate from this world if I didn’t choose my most favorite verse of the Bible, it would be today’s verse. Why? Because there are thousands of verses I love. Actually, it’s not that difficult for me to pick this passage. I mean what a love letter!
Unfortunately, we’ve all been to prayer meetings where there was a lot of “babbling.” Eloquent wording, but babbling nonetheless.
Here’s that old confusing redemption and sanctification thing. Redemption means without our earning it, we are redeemed. Because it is only by the grace of the Father and atonement by His Son, that our sins are covered. Sanctification is the process is living out that our flesh was crucified. Because we will be dealing with those passions and desires that fight against the spirit in us for the rest of our lives.
We learn how to love because we have the perfect example, Yeshua — Jesus. But, there are other examples of a perfect love.
We have a Heavenly Father that wants to give us the best. Have you ever noticed, we don’t always notice what is best for us? My mother at one time took her young granddaughters out on a special date for their birthday. She would let them dine at their favorite restaurant and go to their favorite store and pick out a special treasure — within reason — that she would purchase for them.
Yesterday, a dear friend passed on. Today, he reaps the reward of riches with the honor of eternal life with his Heavenly Father, because he accepted the redemption of His Son and Messiah. Rabbi Scott Sekulow was an amazing man of God who loved Jesus and spread the Good News around the world. He and his wife, Judy were quite a team and I can’t imagine what her and their daughter’s world is like this morning.
Our verse today is taken from one of Paul’s earliest letters to the Thessalonians. It appears that the non-Jewish believers were being persecuted for their faith in Jesus by other Thessalonians, as the Jewish believers were by non-believing Jews. If you have an opportunity, reread this epistle, at least this chapter. Paul’s tone is gentle, pastoral, encouraging, as well as personal.
Mark has done a great job of recapping just how much the disciples DIDN’T get Yeshua. After nearly two thousand years of molding His followers into icons — sculpting statues, painting paintings, turning glass into the likeness of them — we forget, they were clueless most of the time. They were sheep following their Shepherd.
The difference between rolling around in our fear and going nowhere and turning our fear into worship, is taking those fears to our Heavenly Father.
