Wisdom’s Journey: Proverbs 15:18

Today’s Blog: Are you the calm one?

TODAY’S PROVERB: A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but one who is slow to anger calms a quarrel. Proverbs 15:18, TLV

If we can remain calm during a heated quarrel, we can see, hear, and think more clearly. When personal attacks enter a quarrel, if we can remain calm, a win-win resolution is possible. How can we remain calm, especially when emotions escalate?

Over the years, I’ve learned that IF I can change my mindset from participant in the argument to mediator for a resolution, I am better able to discern what the other person is really saying.

When people attack our character, family, loved ones, faith, or politics it’s very difficult to remain calm — to not take it personally. But, if we can treat even the most challenging events as a mediator rather than injured party, a resolution might be possible. This does not mean we compromise on God’s truth, but we may be called to compromise our goals and expectations.

Still, there are times when the best solution is to walk away — calmly.

I wish I could say I’m good at this. Sadly, I’m not. It’s difficult to surrender our right to be right, or offended. But, the rewards mean better, healthier relationships. And, I’m all for that!

May we be the calm one, my friends.
